About 8 months ago, I got my first Himalayan Salt Lamp, and it was one of the most exciting deliveries I received this year. I’ve known about the wonders of salt lamps for quite some time, so I’m not really sure why it took me so long to get one. But, it is currently at my bedside and I will definitely be ordering more to put around my house. (It is one of my favorite products).
Science and advocates claim a number of amazing benefits of salt, which date back centuries ago. Popularity of Himalayan salt lamps has risen in the western hemisphere over the past decade.
In order to fully understand Himalayan salt lamp benefits, we need to have a brief chemistry lesson. But instead of boring and confusing you (and myself) with heavy science talk, I will just touch the surface of how these babies are claimed to function.
Himalayan Salt Lamps are negative ion generators. We have both positive and negative ions in the air, and Himalayan Salt Lamps restore a healthy ratio of the two by adding more negative ions. The reason we have too many positive ions comes from electromagnetic radiation. Electromagnetic radiation is emitted from our electronics: like our computer, smart phone, tablets, TV, microwave, and other appliances we now use daily. The build up of positive ions from these devices is inescapable since we are surrounded by these products everyday. But positive ions sound so positive, why should I care? Research shows they are claimed to be related to insomnia, nervousness, allergies, fatigue, and increased stress levels amongst other things. Negative ion generators, like salt lamps, are becoming more and more popular as we are exposed to more positive ions, or electromagnetic radiation. (While I was doing this research I found out that the Japanese have been leading the way with negative ion generators, and even have toothbrushes and air conditioners with build in ion generators. Pretty neat.)
What are the benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps?
1. Cleansing The Air
Probably the most well-known benefit (and reason I bought one) is that salt lamps cleanse and purify the air we breathe.
They do this through hygroscopy (ah, another science word). This means they attract and absorb water molecules with contaminants inside and trap them into the salt. The lamps are claimed to be powerful at removing dust, pollen, cigarette smoke and other offenders from the air.
2. Improved Breathing
The positive ions that come from electronics have an impact on our respiratory system. By releasing negative ions, the air we breathe is much better for our lungs and respiratory health. If you find yourself constantly coughing in your home, try getting a salt lamp to ionize the air.
Since the salt lamps remove contaminants and bad to breathe things from the air, like dust and mold, people with allergies and asthma can seriously benefit from getting a lamp. Some claim improvement in these issues in just two weeks after introducing a salt lamp into their home.
4. Improved Mood/Reduced Stress
We can all use another tool to boost in our mood, right? 🙂 Due to the affects negative ions have on our body, salt lamps can have a huge boost on our moods. Some claim improved concentration and improved mood due the enhanced oxygen circulation and increased serotonin levels salt lamps can bring.
Have insomnia? The theory behind positive ions claims they have a negative affect on our sleeping patterns. Add a salt lamp to your life and you may be in for a good nights sleep.
6. Increased Energy Levels
Positive ions drain the energy in our bodies. Add a salt lamp to your work space and see if your productivity increases. (I need to do this ;p)
7. A beautiful and environmentally conscious light source
If you are a skeptic to any of the above benefits of salt lamps, I think this point is reason alone to get one. Salt lamps provide a beautiful pink lighting, is a great piece of décor, and is a more environmentally conscious light source. Consider this as your new bedside lamp.
There are just as many people that live by these claims as there are people who dismiss them as complete BS. So definitely do your own research before loving or hating the idea of having your own salt lamp. As for me, I honestly can’t say I can tie any improvements in my life solely to the lamp. I hope my air quality is better, but the truth is I just don’t know. I don’t think this means my lamp is faulty. I honestly am not near it much and I only light it right before bed. This won’t stop me from using one, however, because it’s just a really pretty part of my room now.
I think to truly test the benefits of the lamp, one must have a lamp in every room and keep it lit at most times. I would like to test this myself… Maybe I will do that soon and write a follow up post. Stay tuned..
P.S. – this is one lamp I recommend. But there are plenty on the market! Just research you’re buying from a trusted source and don’t get dooped for a fake one. Here are ways to tell if you’ve bought a fake one.
