What’s Really In Your Tea? + Lumi Tea Review

lumi tea review

Hi Tea Lovers! If I haven’t said it before, I am a tea enthusiast and drink hot tea all year long. I love teas because they’re soothing and healing. Stomach hurts? Tired? Anxious? Sniffly? Drink some tea! There’s a tea blend to heal all symptoms and moods. Teas have a huge amount of antioxidants and disease fighting flavonoids, which is why they are a super healthy beverage option. For ages teas have been praised and used because of their medicinal values. Some teas are used to fight off viruses, heal illnesses and research suggests the antioxidants in tea can even prevent cancer. (Hint: The longer you steep your tea, the more benefits you’ll get!)

So, we get that tea is amazing (and delicious)… but what many people don’t know, is that the brand of tea you buy is a big deal.

Many commercial tea brands are filled with pesticides and chemicals. Ugh. Some herbs used in popular tea blends (like peppermint and spearmint) are allowed 100 times more Glyphosate than normal GM foods. Wow. Bein’ healthy ain’t easy.

{Education Break: Glyphosate is an herbicide and it is the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Round Up, which is sprayed on our produce and crops. Glyphosate exposure has been linked to developmental issues, infertility, allergies, irritation, gastrointestinal disease and even cancer. There are, as always, people who dispute this, but definitely be cautious of this herbicide. Have you ever been out to eat and see something on the menu that looks out of place: like pasta at a sushi restaurant, and say to yourself “That’s weird.. Do I really trust getting Italian food from a Japanese place? What do they know about pasta?” Well Monsanto, creators of Round Up, first were involved in the creation Agent Orange. Agent Orange is a powerful mixture of chemicals that was used during the Vietnam War. It was later linked to serious health issues to those it was exposed to. Like tumors, birth defects, psychological issues and cancer. And this company now has a hand in the food we eat. Let that sink in…}

Ok. Rant over. One of the most popular conventional brands of tea, Lipton, is at the top of the list of pesticide containing teas. And Celestial has been involved in lawsuits based on the pesticides found in their teas. On top of this, a lot of teas have hidden artificial sweeteners and flavors. What was first a healthy soothing beverage is now an artificial nightmare, WTF. The best way to avoid this mess is to research the brands of tea you’re drinking, look over the ingredients and choose organic.

I recently discovered Lumi Tea, and overall it is one I’d recommend! I have the Boost blend and Revive blend of loose leaf teas. Let’s take a look at the ingredients of each.

Boost

  • Organic Oolong
  • Yerba Mate
  • Organic Ginseng
  • Lemon Grass
  • Peppermint Leaf
  • Organic Goji Berry

Revive

  • Organic Green Tea
  • Organic Chinese Red Date
  • Organic Ganoderma
  • Java Tea
  • Peppermint Leaf
  • Organic Goji Berry
  • Organic Roselle

The only slight concern is the peppermint leaf not being labeled organic. Other than that, the teas are filled with organic, super healthy ingredients! The tea is loose leaf tea, so you will need a infuser, strainer or cheese cloth to steep it in. Lumi Tea conveniently sells a bpa free infuser in pretty colors (I have the canary yellow). If you’re interested in trying some tea out, use my discount code BANANAS at checkout for 15% off your purchase! Wahoo.
