Lessons Learned: Tony Robbins “I Am Not Your Guru”

tony robbins i am not your guru

I recently watched Tony Robbin’s Netflix documentary “I am Not Your Guru”, which takes a look inside his 6-day program: Date With Destiny. Date With Destiny is a transformational retreat helping attendees experience immense personal growth in all areas of life (personal, finance, career, past hurts, relationships etc) in a short amount of time. The program promises to reignite your passions to achieve the ultimate vision of your life. You will gain a deep understanding of what motivates you while experiencing personal breakthroughs.

While those are definitely heavy promises to make for only a 6-day program with over 2,000 participants in attendance, based off the documentary and reviews, Tony Robbins delivers on that promise. He says Date With Destiny is “the ultimate journey for those who demand the most out of life”. That sounds pretty amazing to me because that is exactly what my goal is: to gain the most out of life. I have no plans on attending this event in the near future, but enjoyed the documentary and recommend it to all lovers of personal breakthrough, motivation and those looking to take their life into their own hands.

I did some avid note-taking during the documentary (which I highly recommend doing when watching or reading anything moving – it really changes the way you ingest the information) and here are some of my favorite quotes and lessons I jotted down.

TR: “Most people overestimate what they can do in a year, and underestimate what they can do in two or three decades”
TR: “If I can uncover what beliefs and values control me, I can design me”

LM: This is one of my favorites because it is EXACTLY what I live by. If there is anything you want to change in your life, start with your beliefs! You can change your world by changing your mind. When you figure this out, you can start creating your life.

TR: “Blame people with your soul, not your head”

LM: This basically means, instead of blaming people for the bad in your life (victim mentality), blame people for the good (even if it seems bad)

Tony used the example of his mother and his tough upbringing with her. Instead of blaming her for how hard she was on him, he blames her for how strong she made him. If she was the “perfect” mother to him, he would never be the man he is today and would never have accomplished these amazing things.

Really awesome perspective I am going to try to practice.

TR: “Life is always happening for us not to us – problems are gifts”

LM: Again, this just highlights the power of perspective.

TR: “If you’re going to make peace with a problem in your life, do it for real and more than once”
TR: “We take little problems and make them into big things because we don’t want to deal with the big problems”

LM: I found this interesting and never really had this thought before.

TR: “Do the right thing when you know it’s right, not just when it’s convenient and comfortable for you”
TR: “Sculpt yourself into what you want in life instead of tolerating your circumstances”

TR: “We all get what we tolerate”
TR: “Stay in your head, you’re dead”

TR: “Most people are so busy making a living, they never design a life”

LM: My ultimate fav words of wisdom
