Is Yerba Mate the New Coffee?

yerba mate

I am currently sitting at a café in Asbury Park, NJ sipping on some yerba mate–pronounced “yer-bah mah-tay”. I am spending the summer living at the Jersey Shore (keep up with me on my travels and move here) and had the day off to chill down here. I spent the early afternoon eating chia seed pudding on the beach and listening to music, and then relocated to this cool café in Asbury to do some work and writing. Today’s revelation: It’s easy to get caught up in worrying and planning for the future instead of focusing on the present. The small happenings and freedom of this day grounded me and redirected my focus to the present moment and where I am in my life. I am so grateful for the life I am living.  I used to dream about Wednesdays where I’d have the freedom to spend a day just like this one. And now I’m here, living it. It’s awesome 🙂

So.. What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba mate is made from dried leaves and twigs of a South American plant, Ilex paraguariensis. It is technically not tea or coffee, but holds traits of both. Yerba mate naturally contains caffeine (but only 1/3 that of regular coffee) and is both nourishing and rejuvenating. It holds amazing health benefits beyond that of tea, while providing mental focus and energy (without the crackhead crash experienced by coffee).

My yerba mate was served to me steeping in a mini pot. I didn’t add any sweeteners, and can describe the taste as an Earthier and stronger green tea. I opt for yerba mate when I feel I’ve been drinking too much caffeine but still want an energy boost. Between kombucha, yerba mate and kava do we really even need coffee anymore??? Ok, yes, we do. I’ll never completely leave coffee. But cutting back is totally doable with all of these alternatives.

What are the main health benefits of Yerba Mate?

  1. Natural Boost of Energy

Yerba mate is a favorable alternative to coffee because it boosts energy, but without the crash, agitation or restlessness of coffee. Yerba mate doesn’t contain as much caffeine as coffee, but also contains theobromine, which is a mild feel good stimulant. Choose yerba mate when you’re looking for a smooth and balanced boost of energy.

  1. Improved Mental Focus

Main benefits of drinking yerba mate include improved mental focus, attention and clarity. Drinking a cup of yerba mate before I write helps me more than coffee because I’m attentive and not too restless.

  1. Nutrient Packed

Like tea, yerba mate is packed with different nutritional benefit. It is actually more nutritious than green tea and contains a wide variety of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other awesome compounds like polyphenols, carotene and fatty acids.

Where can I buy Yerba Mate?

If you can’t find a local café or natural food store that sells fresh yerba mate, you can order some online from Amazon. I am going to try to drink Yerba Mate in place of coffee while I’m working and see the affect it has on me. I predict more productivity on the way, we shall see 🙂
